Spend vs. Save — Where to Invest In Your Skincare

Spend vs. Save — Where to Invest In Your Skincare

It's never too late to start investing in your skincare routine. You may be asking yourself: spend or save? I'm here to tell you that it is both! Get the best of both worlds by using products with high-quality ingredients for an immediate, noticeable result and saving on the other items so you can buy more of what matters most.

SAVE

  1. Cleansers- Your cleanser should be a simple and fuss-free step in your skincare routine. It should be powerful enough to remove dirt, oil, makeup and SPF, but gentle enough to protect your skin barrier and prevent it from drying out.
  2. Moisturisers- Your moisturiser should also be a basic and uncomplicated step in your routine. It should be suited to your skin type (Dry, Dehydrated, Oily, Combination, Normal) and do the job of keeping your skin moisturised for an extended period of time. Don’t waste your money on moisturisers that contain lots of ingredients (or active ingredients for that matter) as they aren’t able to permeate the skin barrier and will wash down the sink when you next cleanse your face…
  3. SPF- Zinc isn’t that expensive. So don’t pay an arm and a leg for it. You can find a great and simple SPF product for less than $30 that will last you more than 2 months. Things can become costly if you don’t like the consistency of mineral-based sunscreens. Additional ingredients can be paired with zinc to improve its texture and ease of application- but those ingredients are expensive. That is what will bump up the price of your SPF.

Verdict- Don’t spend more than $40 on these products.

SPEND

  1. Serums- We use serums to target specific skin concerns. Products that are better at targeting these skin concerns will be more expensive. Why? Because they use active ingredients and advanced technology to deliver these results. This is what costs manufacturers more money, hence why it costs the consumers more money.  In this circumstance, natural or cheap isn’t always better if you want to get quick, targeted results.
  2. Oils- Oils are also used to address specific skin ailments. For oils, the cost is a direct indicator of quality and potency. For example- You may find a 30mL Argan Oil product for $10 and one for $40. The $10 product contains 50% Argan Oil and 50% Dimethicone. The $40 product contains 100% pure cold-pressed Argan Oil. Which one would you prefer to use? While the $10 isn’t bad for your skin, it just has a lower potency, and if you want to reap the benefits of Argan Oil, you’re much better off using the 100% concentration. This is applicable to ALL nut, seed and flower oils used for cosmetic purposes.
  3. Treatments- Treatments refer to your weekly, bi-weekly or monthly exfoliators, masks, overnight masks and salon treatments. These products are used to address a particular skin concern and improve the quality, texture and appearance of the skin. Like serums, these products contain active ingredients and advanced technology to exert their effect. This is what costs manufacturers more money, hence why it costs the consumers more money. Additionally, the ingredients are often found at higher concentrations, hence the increase in cost. With in-salon treatments, you are paying for the product as well as the expert’s time and skills.  Don’t skimp, or you’ll find yourself scrubbing your face with sand...

Verdict - Splurge. Spend $30+ to get the most out of these steps in your skincare routine.
